What Baby Knows, What Baby Doesn't Know - Part 2

Grace is nine weeks old now and grows more sophisticated by the day.  I couldn't be prouder watching her discover each new small piece of the world, even if she doesn't get her head around all the details right away.

What Grace Knows - How to Take the Binky Out of Her Mouth

In its most basic form (spitting it out), Grace has known how to expel her binky since the first day we gave it to her.  And while that's still her favorite method of de-binkying, she's added a new wrinkle to her game.  Over the last week she's learned how to grab the edges and handle of the binky with her right thumb and forefinger, hold onto it and take it out of her mouth.

What Grace Doesn't Know - How to Get the Binky Back in Her Mouth

Of course, this leaves her with a problem, a suddenly binkyless existence.  Now, for you or I that's an acceptable fate, not so much for my daughter.  Panic sets in, and the steady coordination that got her hand to her mouth for the big removal escapes her, replaced by frantic flailing.  A case of the butterfingers inevitably follows, and now the binky is trapped on the mattress immediately beside her head, so tantalizingly close yet so unattainably far.

Always the fighter, my girl won't give up at this point.  She'll make a last ditch effort to shovel the binky back in her mouth with her forearm, which works about as well as you'd think.  Always the intelligent fighter, this is when she knows she's beat and taps out, crying out for mommy and daddy.  We of course dutifully come to her aid and put the binky back into her mouth, only to watch her repeat the whole process over again four seconds later.

Now that I think of it, I guess that means Grace does know how to get the binky back in her mouth.
